Pink Noise’s debut album is a modern form of improvisation, born from the creative synergy between Théophile Blanchon and Gilles Schürch. This dynamic duo merges Théophile’s lyrical trumpet with the expansive soundscapes of Eurorack synthesis, while Gilles brings his rhythmic versatility and innovative use of effects on acoustic drums. Together, they craft improvised compositions that blur genre boundaries—seemingly structured and thoughtful, yet created entirely in the moment. The album takes the listener on a sonic journey where each improvisation tells its own story, filled with conceptual ideas, emotions, unpredictability, and musical dialogue

  • Organic vs. Synthetic
Théophile’s trumpet, with its rich, vocal-like quality, serves as a human and emotional anchor in the music. In contrast, the analog Eurorack synthesizer introduces a colder, almost unpredictable synthetic element, with modulating sequences and electrified, twisting textures that challenge the trumpet’s natural warmth.
  • Percussion in Space
Through the use of effects, Gilles manipulates the perception of time and space with his drums. From the steady pulse of the bass drum to the seemingly infinite resonance of a cymbal in reverb, he plays with spatiality, creating textures, and sometimes even melodies—intricate layers of sound upon which the trumpet resonates freely.

The collaboration between Gilles and Théophile is about capturing the essence of improvisation while maintaining a sense of conscious meaning. Their performances are driven by a shared desire to explore sound in real time, constantly pushing each other toward new sonic territories. Even in their most experimental moments, their improvisations retain an emotional and structural coherence.

Théophile’s experience as both a melodic improviser and a sonic architect using the Eurorack synthesizer brings depth and originality to each track. Gilles contributes with his strong creative presence, shaping the musical conversation with rhythmic and expressive direction.

Their music reflects a deep trust in each other’s instincts—where the balance between chaos and control is ever-present, and where every note, every sound, and every texture plays a role in an immersive sonic journey.

Originally from Yverdon-les-Bains, Théophile began his training as a media technician (2010-2014). During this time, he was admitted into a pre-professional music program in Lausanne. In 2014, he started a trumpet bachelor’s degree at HEMU Lausanne (2014-2018). Eager to explore new musical encounters, he moved to Zurich, where he earned a Master’s in Music Pedagogy (2018-2020) and later a Master’s in Concert Performance (2021-2023). Beyond his classical studies, Théophile is deeply involved in jazz improvisation, early music, and electro-acoustic experimentation. He performs in a variety of styles and ensembles in the region, including Brassmaster Flash (hip-hop), Aeria Brass Quintet, Chalkos (electronic), RH Collective (afro-beats), and Pink Noise (improvisation & electronics).

After completing a pre-college year at Jazzcampus Basel, Gilles pursued his jazz drumming studies at ZHdK Zurich from 2020 to 2023. He is currently continuing his education with a Master’s in Pedagogy at ZHdK. As part of his studies, he has performed with renowned musicians such as Nik Bärtsch, David Virelles, and Eivind Aarset. In addition to Pink Noise, he collaborates with singer Paula Mia and regularly plays with various formations.

Loïc Cardinal is a pianist and composer based in Zurich, where he is pursuing a Master’s in Jazz Pedagogy at ZHdK with David Virelles and Chris Wiesendanger. Originally from Wallis, he studied in Lausanne with Yannick Delez and later at Basel’s Jazzcampus with Malcolm Braff and Hans Feigenwinter, also learning from international figures such as Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Mark Turner.

His path has taken him from leading his own project Cardilepsie at festivals like Cully Jazz and JazzOnze+ to collaborations in soul and electronic music, playing synthesizers for artists including Coco Elan, Mia Oud, Maryy (sub) and Helen Ribi. Since 2017, he has also co-organized the festival Jazz sous les étoiles in Saint-Luc.

Currently, Loïc is active as a sideman in various projects, performing with Mia Oud and ELLESTE100, while developing his main project, Best of Both Worlds, which fuses jazz aesthetics with synthesizers, inspired by Aaron Parks and Bill Laurance.
